How to collect video testimonials that sound like your customers

Ask better questions, help customers record a clear video and review it before publishing. A practical guide to collecting video feedback with Sayso.

A useful video testimonial tells a small, specific story: what someone needed, what happened and what they thought of the experience. It does not need a studio, a script or a perfect first take.

Your job is to make that story easy to tell. Give the customer a helpful question, a simple way to record and a clear explanation of how the video may be used.

Ask for an experience, not an endorsement

‘Tell everyone we're great’ gives the customer little to work with. Ask them to describe something they remember. Specific details help a future customer understand whether the service might suit them.

Choose one or two questions rather than sending an interview sheet. Do not suggest outcomes the customer has not mentioned or ask them to repeat a result you cannot verify.

  • What were you looking for when you contacted us?
  • What part of the experience stood out?
  • What would you tell someone considering this service?

Make the invitation easy to decline

Some customers are comfortable talking on camera; others prefer writing. Offer both options. A thoughtful written comment is more useful than a video somebody felt pushed into recording.

Tell them where the video may appear before they start. Permission to send private feedback should not be treated as automatic permission to use someone's face in an advertisement.

Example to adapt

Would you be happy to share a short video about your experience? One detail that stood out is plenty. You can record or upload it through this link, or write a comment instead. Please read the video permission in the form before sending.

Help them get clear sound and a usable picture

A phone is enough for a straightforward account of an experience. Suggest a quiet room, a stable position and light in front of the person rather than behind them. Ask for a short test if they are unsure whether the microphone is working.

Let the customer speak in their own words. A pause or a slight stumble can remain if the meaning is clear. The goal is an understandable account, not a memorised commercial.

In Sayso, customers can record in a supported browser or upload an existing MP4, WebM or MOV file. Recording stops at two minutes, and files can be up to 25 MB. If camera access is unavailable, uploading a file or leaving text gives them another route.

Preview before sending, review before publishing

Encourage the customer to watch and listen to the recording before submitting. They can replace or remove it and confirm permission for the business to receive and publish it after review.

Sayso stores the video with the feedback. You can watch it from the dashboard, and approved, visible testimonials can appear in the website widget. The recording is not automatically posted to Google.

Check the content as carefully as you check the sound. Does it mention another customer, private information or a claim that needs context? If it cannot be used as it stands, ask the customer for a suitable replacement rather than changing the meaning of their account.

Put the story near the question it answers

A testimonial about a first visit may help on a booking page. A story about a specific service may belong next to that service's description. Choose the placement for its relevance, not simply because the page has an empty space.

Give visitors written context as well. A descriptive comment alongside the video lets someone understand the point before pressing play. When you add captions, check them against the recording before publishing, especially names and technical terms. Keep the speaker's meaning intact.

Put it into practice

Ask one useful question, offer a choice of text or video, and make publication permission clear. A specific account in the customer's own words is the asset you are trying to collect.
